My Very First Amigurumi
My very first crochet amigurumi
Today marks ONE year since I picked up a crochet hook and made my very first magic circle.
I felt like I just jumped straight into learning how to make amigurumi because that was my main motivation for learning crocheting in the first place. I actually learnt how to make my first amigurumi before I even learnt how to make chains. 😆
The thing about me is that I find it very stifling when I want to do something but don't have the skills to do it. I wanted to learn crocheting because I wanted to be able to make amigurumi, simply because they looked super cute. I know that I enjoy learning the most when I'm able to just try things out and figure how things work along the way. So that's exactly what I did when I started learning to crochet - I watched youtube videos to learn how to make a magic circle then decided that the only way I would learn would be to just try making an amigurumi.
Day 1 of my crochet journey
.... was spending hours making the magic circle over and over again until I felt like I was getting the hang of it. Thankfully, I was still on my Easter break so could spend as much time as I needed to figure things out.
Day 2 of my crochet journey
.... was jumping straight into making my first amigurumi. Because why not? I figured that the worse thing that could happen would be that I had a tangled ball of yarn but at least I would've known that I tried.
At the time, I also realised that I needed to learn how to read patterns as watching youtube videos and replaying sections of them over and over again as I did when learning the magic circle was getting rather frustrating. It made me impatient having to listen and watch the same part of the youtube video again and again just to follow along. So I decided to find a video where I could watch how something was done whilst also having a written pattern to follow along ... and this led to me creating my very first amigurumi, the red heart.
The Red Heart
Completed On: 11 April 2023
Edition: 230101
Yarn: Liliarge Milk Yarn
Tutorial/Pattern: https://clubcrochet.com/lessons/how-to-crochet-a-classic-hear
This was the very first amigurumi I completed. I found the tutorial very helpful as I had the chance to start learning how to read patterns since I could watch the video and follow along with the written pattern for each step. Before making this, I had tried finding tutorials of how to read a pattern but none really helped.
Since I was a complete noob, I had to rewatch the video numerous times in order to keep up with each round. I was also not familiar with how to recognise the stitches and I often had to undo a round because I lost count of my stitches. The most challenging part of the amigurumi heart was probably trying to sew the two halves together as shown in the video as I clearly hadn't learnt how to sew at the time. Even though on hindsight there are a number of aspects I could've improved on, I think for being a complete noob at the time, I was just super proud of myself for even managing to create something that remotely looked like a heart... even if it was just because of the red colour. 😄
Having gained the confidence that I could make something, even though it was a simple heart, I went on to make my next amigurumi ...
The Green Whale

I remember searching for different youtube tutorials until I found the one for this whale. I was motivated to learn how to make the whale because the end product looked super cute in the video. It was at times quite frustrating for me when I first started making the whale because I kept having to rewatch the same parts of the video again and again just to follow along. I was of course still a complete noob at the time so apart from not losing count of the number of stitches in each round, the most challenging part about the whale for me was probably the colour change and learning how to sew the different parts, such as the back and side fins, together. It was also my very first time using safety eyes. It took me many hours to finish this whale and thankfully I had the whole day to do so since I was still on my Easter break, but it was very satisfying once it was done and it still turned out quite cute in my eyes especially because it ended up looking quite derpy.
So in 3 full days, I learnt how to make a magic circle, the basic stitches, sewing things together and also colour changes. Of course, looking back at these amigurumi that I created at the very start of my crochet journey, I know which parts I could've done better but at the time, it was satisfying just being able to see any progress.
